How the number is built
There are three inputs: a base fare, a per-mile amount, and a per-minute amount for the time the trip realistically takes. A minimum fare applies so very short hops stay viable. The distance and duration come from the real driving route between your two addresses, not a straight line.
Everything else you might be charged elsewhere is either absent or shown before you confirm. There is no surge multiplier, no booking fee that appears at the end, no per-bag charge, and no fee for a child seat beyond what is displayed up front. Where rideshare costs more than people think
On a quiet Tuesday morning an app ride on a short local route is often a little cheaper than a pre-booked car, and I will say that plainly. The comparison changes at the moments you are most likely to actually need a ride.
Weekday 4 to 6 p.m. across the Irvine business parks, Friday and Saturday evenings in Newport and Laguna, anything that empties a venue at once, and any wet morning in a county that does not drive well in rain — those are the windows where the multiplier lands. A price that was $28 at three in the afternoon is a very different price at ten past five.

How to pay less on the routes you take often
If you ride regularly, ask for a discount code. Three or more rides per week is 10% off; five or more per week is 15%. It is applied to the quoted fare when you enter the code at booking, and it is the single easiest way to bring a standing commute down.
Book both legs of a round trip together rather than separately. It does not change the arithmetic but it does hold the slot you need on the way back, which on a one-car operation is worth more than a few dollars.
