Where Your Ride Actually Meets You at John Wayne Airport (SNA)

There is a particular moment at John Wayne Airport that I have watched hundreds of times from the arrivals curb.

A family comes through the sliding doors from baggage claim. Two big suitcases, a car seat bag, a stroller, a kid who has been awake since 4 a.m. The parent looks at their phone, then looks up at the roadway, then back at the phone. Then they start walking toward the crosswalk, because the app has just told them their driver is waiting on the third floor of the parking structure across the road.

That walk is the part nobody warns you about. It is not far, but it is a crossing, an elevator, three floors, and a hunt for a grey car among other grey cars, all with your luggage in tow.

I drive Orange County full time, in one car, and SNA is the airport I know best. Here is exactly how pickup works there, terminal by terminal, and what changes when your ride is booked in advance instead of hailed from the terminal floor.

SNA is one terminal wearing three colours

Everything at John Wayne happens inside the Thomas F. Riley Terminal. It is divided into three areas — A, B and C — and the airport colour-codes them so you can find your area without reading signs: Terminal A is pink, Terminal B is blue, Terminal C is orange.

That colour is the single most useful thing you can tell your driver. Airline names get confusing because carriers move around and some operate from more than one area. A pillar colour does not.

The layout is simple once you have it. Upper level is Departures: ticket counters, security, curbside drop-off and valet — that is where I bring you when you are flying out. Lower level is Arrivals: baggage claim, the Ground Transportation Center, and the curb where cars collect you. There are seven baggage belts in total: two in A, two in B, three in C, with belt 7 handling international arrivals.

Terminal C is worth knowing about specifically. It handles Southwest, which is the busiest airline at SNA, plus Frontier, Allegiant and Spirit. It also contains the federal inspection station, so if you are coming back from Mexico or Canada you will clear customs there before you reach baggage claim. That adds time — often a lot of it — and it is the single most common reason a pickup slips.

The garage rule that catches people out

Here is the part that surprises almost every first-time arrival. Uber and Lyft cannot collect you at the arrivals curb at SNA. Standard rideshare pickup happens on Level 3 of the parking structures — A2 for Terminal A, B2 for Terminal B, and structure C for Terminal C. You exit baggage claim, cross the roadway, ride an elevator up, and meet your driver on a parking deck.

Drop-offs are the opposite: rideshare can leave you curbside at Departures like anyone else. It is only the arrival that moves you upstairs.

There is a reason for it. SNA runs a queue system for app drivers inside a geofenced waiting area out by MacArthur and the 405, and the garages keep that volume off an already tight arrivals curb. It works well for the airport. It is just not much fun with a stroller.

Prearranged cars are handled separately. When your ride is booked in advance rather than dispatched by an app, the collection point is on the arrivals level itself, at or near the Ground Transportation Center between Terminals A and B — no crossing, no elevator, no parking deck. That is how my John Wayne Airport car service works on every trip.

What to text me, and when

I do not need much. I need two things at the right time.

When your wheels touch down, send me one line — “landed, Terminal C.” That is my cue to start moving from the waiting area toward the terminal. From there I am about six to eight minutes out.

When you are standing at the carousel, send me the belt number. Now I know whether you are five minutes from the door or twenty-five, and I can time my arrival so I am not circling and you are not waiting.

If you are coming through customs, tell me before you fly. International arrivals through Terminal C can take anything from twenty minutes to well over an hour, and I would rather build that into the plan than guess at it from the curb.

I cannot park and wait indefinitely — nobody can, that is what the cell phone lot at MacArthur and Campus is for — so those two messages are genuinely the difference between a smooth pickup and a lap of the terminal loop.

Delays, early landings, and the 5 a.m. run

I track the flight number you give me when you book. If your inbound slips two hours, your pickup slips two hours, and there is no waiting charge for it, because the delay was not yours.

Early landings are the same in reverse. Flights into SNA land early more often than people expect, particularly the first Southwest banks of the morning.

The direction that needs more care is the outbound one. For a departure out of SNA I plan backwards from your boarding time, not forwards from your address, and I build in the security queue for your specific terminal — the checkpoints in A, B and C do not move at the same speed, and the Terminal C line on a Monday morning is its own event. If you are flying at 6 a.m. from Irvine, the honest answer is usually a 4:15 a.m. pickup, and I would rather tell you that when you book than apologise for it at the kerb.

Travelling with a small child

The certified child seat lives in my car. It does not need to be requested days ahead, it does not arrive separately, and it is fitted with ISOFIX anchors before I collect you.

This matters more at SNA than people realise, because the alternative is carrying your own seat through the terminal, onto the crosswalk, up the elevator and onto a parking deck to install it yourself, next to a moving traffic lane, while your flight-tired child waits. I have watched that happen. It is the single strongest argument for booking a car in advance at this airport.

Tick the child-seat box when you book, or say the word on WhatsApp, and it is fitted and checked before I leave for the terminal.
